Schwalbe Euro 4X Series round 1 - Winterberg

The opening round of the Schwalbe Euro 4X Series has just taken place here in Winterberg, Germany. The race had nearly 200 riders entered so practice has been busy and the track has had a constant flow of riders for the whole weekend.

In qualifying, Michael Mechura had a perfect run to take the fastest time ahead of Jakub Riha, Joost Wichman and Tomas Slavik. Just 2 seconds covered the top 25 riders making this one of the closest qualifying sessions ever in 4X.

In the women's Steffi Marth took the fastest qualifier ahead of Katy Curd and Laura Brethauer.

So onto race day. There was some light rain during the finals but that actually made he track even better. The corners opened up and had more grip so the riders were really happy.

The drama all started to unfold in the quarter finals. In the first quarter, Adam Stasek and Milan Mysik came together in the first turn and were out of the race. In another quarter final  Joost Wichman found himself in trouble in 4th place half way down the track. He took a risky inside line and crashed out of the race. He was badly bruised, but will be back.

In the semi finals Tomas Slavik and Michael Mechura made perfect starts and booked their place in the final. Scott Beaumont and Daniel Prijkel were also flying all day and moved into the finals.

So first up were the women. Fastest qualifier Steffi Marth was up against Katy Curd, Laura Brethauer and Tanja Hendrysiak. Curd got the snap and led into turn 1. It was still anyone's race down the second straight, but Curd held them off. Heading to the lower parts of the track, Steffi Marth pushed Katie really hard, but Curd held onto to take the win at round 1 of the Schwalbe Euro 4X Series.

The men's final stepped up to the start. Mechura on gate 1, Slavik on 2, Beaumont on 3 and Prijkel on 4. As the gate dropped, Slavik led into turn 1 with Boom Boom behind him and Mechura in 3rd. Beaumont got wide on the exit and Slavik pulled a small gap. Heading onto the lower section the top 3 riders bunched up, and in what was the pass of the day, Mechura squeezed up the inside of Beaumont with no contact to take 2nd position. It really was text book 4X riding and a great example of how precise and skilful 4X racing is now. Across the line, Slavik took the win from Mechura, Beaumont and Prijkel.

An awesome race and a great start to the 2012 Schwalbe Euro 4X Series.

Schwalbe Euro 4X Series round 1 preview - Winterberg, Germany

This weekend see the ever popular Schwalbe Euro 4X Series fire back into action at the Dirt Masters festival which is being held at Winterberg in Germany.

The Series is back for it's third year and through Schwalbe's title sponsorship, has grown every year into one of the World's biggest 4X Series. This weekend, nearly 200 riders have pre entered and will be lining up on the start gate, fired up and ready to take a shot at winning the 2012 Schwalbe Euro 4X Series.

Last year's top 3 riders, Tomas Slavik, Joost Wichman and Scott Beaumont are all entered for the series and will be pushing each other harder than ever, looking to take the 2012 crown. Tomas Slavik has had a fantastic start to his 2012 season with 2 wins in the 4X ProTour, but it will be really interesting to see if anyone can match his pace this weekend with the start of another series.

The track at Winterberg, like most 4X tracks now, is a permanent track that is in use every day 365 days a year. It is fast and flowing and with it's 180 degree corners provides loads of opportunities for passing. The racing is sure to be action packed in front of huge crowds at the Dirt Masters festival over the weekend.

Schwalbe's marketing man, Michael Kull can't wait to see the series get started:
'For Schwalbe, the Euro 4X Series is really important for us. In 2012 we released the Gatestar compound in the Nobby Nic and Racing Ralph tyres that are specifically for 4X racing. We are fully behind the Euro 4X Series and can't wait for another action packed year to see who will take the overall title.'

Like so many 4X races, this round of the series will be broadcast live on the Internet via www.bigair.tv on Sunday.

Schwalbe British 4X Series - round 2 - Penshurst, Kent

Well what a tough weekend round 2 of the Schwalbe British 4X Series proved to be. On Saturday, the track ran really well. There was some light rain at times, but the track was dry and running really fast. The weather forecast assured us that worse was definitely on the way, but no one could have predicted just how much rain would arrive through the night and on Sunday morning..........

The phrase washout may seem to strong, but Sunday morning was just that. Probably the wettest conditions that any 4X national has ever had. A real mudfest was certainly on the cards. As ever though, the 4X guys and girls, picked up their hard tails and got out there on track to start practice. Even though in places the were streams of water running down the hill the riders were loving the track. Super fast and technical is Porc's best description and even in these conditions, riders were flying down the track.

The rain however, did cause a slight problem. The compressor for the start gate unfortunately could not cope with the deluge of rain and it gave up. Race organiser was quick to race of in search of a new compressor in the nearby towns, but to no avail. The gate was designed to work with the air ram or the manual start so after a short delay whilst Chris was on the road, the team went into action to set up the gate up for a manual start. The starter would say: riders ready, random gate and anytime in 1 to 5 seconds, he would release the gate. No lights or beeps. Just a completely random gate drop with no indication at all of when it was going to drop. Some riders were a little nervous of how this would turn out, but we can honestly say that after a couple of tests for the riders, they were all actually loving it.

The completely silent and random gate drop added a new dimension to the race and levelled out the best starters in the business. Now it was instant reactions that would get you out of the gate 1st.

The motos started and sure enough, the sun came out! Immediately the track began to dry and there were some great racing lines. The motos were action packed. Plenty of passing, lots of mistakes no the occasional crash gave some very interesting results. In the elite men's, defending series champion Scott Beaumont and Lewis Lacey were flying. They did not race each other in the motos but both went unbeaten and were looking like the men to watch all day. If anyone was going to challenge them it looked like Scott Roberts or Nathan Parssons.

In the women's it was great to see Joey Gough racing. She was looking fast but Emily Horridge and Jess Greaves were pushing her in every moto. Just like the first round at Leamington a few weeks ago, it was great to see such a big entry in the women's race.

Onto the quarter finals and the first shock of the day. Nathan 'Natedogg' Parssons was knocked out in a tough race. Clearly gutted with the result, he will be back fighting for a good result at round 2 of the 4X Protour in Poland next weekend. Beaumont, Lacey and Roberts were  all through with no problem.

In the semi finals it was Beaumont and Rookie Issac muddy who went through from semi final number 1.  They were to be joined in the final by Lacey and Roberts.

So onto the finals. Fun category was won by:Rhys Jenner  Big fun: Andrew Cooper Youth:  Juvenile:
Christian Corthorn Seniors was a great race as the two Dave's - Richardson and Roberts battled from start to finish with Dave Richardson taking it at the finish line. Masters was won by Gareth Parr and vets dominated by Anthony Fisher
In the women's Joey Gough got the snap and led the race into turn one. She went wide and Emily Horridge dived inside to take the lead. On the second straight Joey got a great drive and moved back past Emily. The two riders battled for the lead all the way to the line, but Joey held on to take the win. An awesome final. Suzanne Lacey was third and Cara Murray fourth.

So finally the elite men's. Gate one was Beaumont, on two was Lacey, three Mundy and on the outside Roberts. Beaumont got the snap and led into turn one. As the riders battled bar to bar, Lacey went to the back and Roberts made a great move to come from the outside gate and into second on the exit of turn one. On the second straight the two Scott's really got the horsepower out and moved away. Scott Roberts kept Boom Boom on his toes all the way, but Beaumont held on and took the win ahead of Roberts, Issac Mundy and Lewis Lacey.

All in all an awesome days racing and despite the tough, wet conditions, racing was as always fantastic and Porc's for 2012 is in the record books.

See you all at Redhill for round 3 in June

Schwalbe British 4X Series – Round 1 – Leamington – April 1

st
The 2012 4X season kicks off next weekend – 1st April with round 1 of the Schwalbe British 4X Series at Leamington, Warwickshire. After a fantastic 2011 season, the 2012 series has grown yet again, with interest and pre entries to the series at an all time high.
To add to the interest at the first round this year, 2010 4X World Champion, Tomas Slavik who rides for the famous RSP team from the Czech Republic is going to be racing. He is on a 3 week tour of the UK and wanted to make sure that he got a race under his belt before the 4X ProTour kicks off on April 14th.
The Leamington track, last year, provided one of the best races of the entire year. Huge crowds flocked to the race as it is in walking distance from Leamington town centre and the atmosphere was fantastic. The track has had some more changes made to it recently by local rider Nathan ‘Natedogg’ Parssons which will help the racing to be even better this year.
2011 British 4X Series Champion, Scott Beaumont, will be looking to start the season well and will surely be the main rival to Tomas Slavik.
‘The winter has been fantastic for me. I’ve switched to Yeti Cycles, training has gone well and with Tomas racing, it is going to be a great start to the series next week’ said Boom Boom.
Nathan Parssons will surely be a threat as he uses his home track knowledge and if last year was anything to go by, he will be the crowd favourite. Scott Roberts is back on Identiti for 2012 and looking in the best shape of his life. A tough winter training with one of his main sponsors No Limits is really paying off, so expect Scott to be in there fighting. Oggy, Lewis Lacey, Duncan Ferris, Will Evans, Jake Ward, Tom Dowie, Gareth Bates and a host of other Elites will be fighting for the win.
How about the Juniors and Seniors that are moving to Elite? 2011 National Champion Luke Limbrick will begin his Elite career at Leamington. Can he repeat his ride from National Champs last year over the course of a whole season..... Issac Mundy, Tom Gethin and Alex Metcalfe will be the ones to watch as they make their debuts.
In Elite women’s, Suzzane Lacey will be the favourite to take the title. After winning the British Series for the last 2 years, she has become the queen of British 4X. Can Nichola Anderson add some consistency in 2012 to take over the top spot or will Car Murray, Jess Greaves or Charlotte Green get in on the action. The elite women’s race is always unpredictable and offers some of the most exciting racing at every British round.
The team Cup made for great competition with Last years winners Team Nakedracing wanting to hold onto the Cup again this year. Over 40 teams took part last year all trying the to get there hands on the cup.

All British 4X rounds are accessable to all. From beginners who can enter Fun (12 to 17 year olds) and Big Fun (18+) all the way up to Vets, there is a class for you. With entry costs holding at £25 for pre entry and £30 on the day, there is no cheaper way of racing your bike all day long with no queues, great viewing for spectators and a fun atmosphere that will make you want to keep coming back.

Pump Tracks have started to emerge all over the UK in recent years. From City centres to rural parks, Pump Tracks take up a small amount of space and provide about as much fun as you can have on a bicycle. No matter what bike you have, or what your skill level is, a pump track is the place to have fun and learn new skills. These new pump tracks have produced a style of riding that combines the skills of all mountain bike disciplines – 4X, Downhill, Cross Country and Dirt Jumping.
The new discipline of Pump Track racing has really taken off Worldwide over the past few years. The bike brand DMR (www.dmrbikes.com) were quick to acknowledge this last year and launched the ‘DMR Pump Track Challenge’ Series. In 2011 there have been three events that have each produced a different winner. Round 1 was won by Bernhard Kerr, Round 2 by Scott Beaumont and Round 3 by Ben Baker. All of these riders will be attending The London Bike Show to find out who will be the King of the London Pump Track.
In addition to these guys, Will Longden, Bernard Kerr, Olly Wilkins, Sam Reynolds, Lewis Lacey, Scott Roberts and Duncan Ferris will headline the UK pro riders who will be invited to challenge for the win.
The track will be slightly different to the other pump tracks that have been used so far for the series. This time the riders will be on a wooden track that will be designed and built by ShoreTrax (www.shoretrax.com). The wooden track will be a dual race with riders racing head to head around it in less than 20 seconds over rollers and around berms.
For 2012, The London Bike Show organisers thought it was important to add a racing discipline to their ‘live action arenas’ and the ‘DMR Pump Track Challenge’ was the perfect discipline to bring to the Excel arena in January.
Pro 4X rider, Scott Beaumont added:
‘The DMR Pump Track Challenge Series in 2011 has been one of the highlights of the season for me. The tracks are really good fun for the riders and exciting for spectators. Racing in front of a big crowd in London Excel in January is going to be amazing. I can’t wait!
The DMR Pump Track Challenge will take place every day during The London Bike Show 2012. Please visit www.thelondonbikeshow.co.uk for all the information you need and follow the regular updates on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelondonbikeshow and Twitter: www.twitter.com/thelondonbikeshow
